Lime Stucco | Heritage Restoration | Roughcast
Project; To renew existing lime stucco on a complete two story building, with original materials and traditional techniques. Roughcast finish.
Project location; Dundas, Ontario
Description; One of the main causes of lime stucco failure is bad detailing on and around a building. There are certain initiatives that should be taken to ensure that a building maintains the wide range of superb benefits that a lime stucco system offers. As part of any installation we do 'The Lime Plaster Company' will give you a step by step idea of what these initiatives should be, and, if some of them are un-obtainable how to deal with that. These initiatives for the most part are very straight forward. On this particular project the life of the lime stucco had unfortunately been compromised due to very bad landscaping and a few old techniques of wood finishing that left the lime mortar open to erosion. At present the building has two of its three coats due to the time of year the system was applied and certain restrictions on the project, so the final finish coat which in this case is a roughcast wll be applied in the spring of 2011. It is possible however to install lime stucco all year round, but certain factors need to be addressed and considered. A few benefits of these systems are the elasticity and breathability of the material itself. The materials elasticity enables the lime stucco to move with the building, taking up any potential settlement or tension that may occur, especially in new builds. This means less cracking and failure in the long run, something that acrylic and cement stucco's lack. The breathability of the material enables a good vapour exchange, protecting the important members of your wall system and preventing things like mold growth etc. Unfortunately in todays construction industry the idealism is to keep moisture out. This essentially means that acrylic and cement based stucco's are impermiable, so should moisture infiltrate the stucco system, and it will!, there is nowhere for it to go except into the all important structural components of your house.
